Medicines for Roatan
|
What is Medicines for Roatan
|
This project aims to address the acute shortages of medicines at the Roatan Public Hospital, and other public and charitable clinics on the island. A Honduran non-profit- organization is being constituted. |
| |
|
| |
Why Is There A Need For Medicine?
|
| In principle, patients who receive a prescription at the public hospital or at one of the public clinics are entitled to free medicines. |
But in Roatan, at least 35,000 destitute patients are going home without receiving medicines each year. This is due to chronic shortages of medicines across the Honduran Public Health System a situation which is common in most developing countries, because of the high cost of medicines. |

| |
What Is The Target For 2006?
|
In 2005, Roatan was affected by three hurricanes, and a heavy rainy season. A large number of patients with infected flesh wounds, severe respiratory infections etc. sere seen by doctors at the hospital. But the hospital pharmacy was out of stock of the most basic antibiotics and analgesics... Our short term objective is to avoid a recurrence of that crisis situation in 2006. |
We aim to raise at least $10,000 by the end of July 2006, which will be used to procure essential medicines for the public hospital during the acute shortage period of October to January. |

| |
What Are Our Long Term Ambitions?
|
Our long-term goal is to raise funds of $50,000 each year. The funds will be used to purchase medicines at cost, from non-profit suppliers to the World Health Organization in Europe, Ship them to Roatan, and donate them to non-profit clinics on the island. Orders will be placed three times a year at set dates. |
Beneficiaries will be held accountable. Where necessary, we will assist them in forecasting their needs, setting up controls and inventory management systems, and securing the storage promises. |
| |
Who Are The Beneficiaries?
|
The medicines will be allocated to non-profit clinics on the island in proportion to the number o patients treated at each facility and the degree or need. |
During the first year, the Coxen Hole public hospital will be the main beneficiary, followed by the oak Ridge and French Harbor public clinic and charitable clinics such aa Clinch Esperenza, Oak Ridge and Helene community clinics, and others. We aim to expand the scope of Utila and Guanaja during the second year of operation |
