Mangroves protect the reef from land influences (water run off, construction, septic etc.) and are efficient bio-filters that maintain coastal water quality and important reef fish that have life cycles linked to these areas. As mangroves are cleared and filled for beaches and construction, they are as threatened as the coral reefs and the fate of both are intertwined. Laws are not enough!
